I purchased my first Rocky in 1990. Horses had always been a love of mine and after my
children were born I wanted them to grow up with horses too. I had shown American Saddlebreds and
loved them dearly but they tend to be high maintenance. I wanted a breed that was easy to keep
with exceptional temperments. It did not take me long to decide on the Rocky Mountain Horse.
The Rocky Mountain Horse was officially recognized as a breed in 1986. Their history originated
on the riding concessions at Natural Bridge State Park about 40 miles from our farm. Rockies are generally
medium build, smiliar to Morgans and have a natural 4 beat gait. To get more information on the Rocky
check out their website Rocky Mountain Horse Association. Most of our horses are doubled registered Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse
and their website is Ky Mountain Horse Association.
Our operation was previously somewhat larger and known as Rocky Spring Farm. We relocated in 2007
to Windsong Manor with only 5 acres on the premises. We keep about 8 horses of which 4 are mares that
we alternate years breeding. I still have a daughter of the first mare I purchased back in 1990. My breeding
strategy has always been to preserve the old bloodlines and solid gait. Currently I have direct daughters
of Sewell's Sam and Squirrel. Having the old bloodlines on the bottom side allows me to breed my
mares to modern stallions with more size and style.
The residence at Windsong Manor was built in 1888 with rock quarried on site. The house has been
beautifully restored and furnished with family antiques. The gardens are my ongoing project and a new
barn will hopefully be built in 2008. With only 5 acres please close the gate when you come in, we
have been known to let the horses graze on the lawn!
Only a few select foals arrive every spring and we usually have a young horse or two we have raised
that may be available for sale. Currently we are offering the mare DeeDee because we are keeping
her filly from last year to add to the breeding mares.
We would love to have you come visit and see our beautiful, personable mountain horses.
You will surely fall in love with them too!
